What is the Best Paleo book?

The Paleo diet is the hottest diet of our time. It isnt a brand new diet fad either. The concept of the Paleolithic diet has been around since the 1800’s. It is put simply, a diet based on the diet of Paleolithic man before the introduction of agriculture. The human being at this time was a hunter-gatherer. He either killed his food, or he found it. The vegetables, fruits and nuts he ate, were harvested, but not planted by him. He was mostly a carnivore, with lesser amounts of vegetables and fruits. His diet was very much, low carb.

There are two main benefits of the Paleo diet. The first is weight loss. With all this protein and little carbs, it is fairly easy to lose significant body fat on the Paleo diet. Furthermore it is a slow and steady type of fat loss, rather than an extreme weight loss plan that makes you drop pounds too fast. Dropping pounds too fast is both unhealthy and short lived. The Paleo diet is considered a lifestyle rather than a diet. It is a diet plan for the rest of your life.

The second advantage is the health advantage. The Paleo diet is well known for its health benefits. By no coincidence, avoiding grains, dairy and legumes appears to have a a healing effect on many people. These are the very  proteins that cause many inflammatory problems in the body. Many Paleo people report vast improvements in chronic problems like allergies and asthma, colitis and IBS, and even serious condtions like diabetes. As a bonus, it also seems to improve energy levels, sexual drive , and cognitive problems for many.

The Paleo diet for the most part is self taught. There are a number of programs and classes, but many times the Paleo beginner starts with a book. This is why so many are looking for the best Paleo book possible, to get them started. One can begin the Paleo diet with ease, but later on it is inevitable that people begin to want to take things to the next level. This means being familar with the Paleo food list, and cooking and baking Paleo foods. This is where a good Paleo book comes into play.

There are many types of Paleo diet books available. There are however only two basic types of people that are searching for the best Paleo book. The experienced Paleo person, and the Paleo beginner. The experienced Paleo person may look for any type of Paleo book. He or she may want a more scientific book to shed light on the facts about this diet. They may also want a cookbook for their collection. The beginner will most of the time want a guide to Paleo and a recipe book. They are looking to investigate the diet and start putting it to work in their lives. Therefore, I believe the most sought after Paleo book, the best Paleo book, will give a bit of the science behind it, as well as teach people how to cook great Paleo recipes including food lists, and how to prepare Paleo meals. Lets look at some candidates for the best Paleo book.

One top contender for best Paleo Book would be

Practical Paleo: A Customized Approach to Health and a Whole-Foods Lifestyle by Diane Sanfilippo, Bill Staley and Robb Wolf.  This book would definitely be of use to both the veteran as well as the Paleo newbie. It has condensed insights into the technical parts of the diet as well as some of best Paleo recipes. This book is well received and favorably reviewed. Some experienced reviewers did feel that the book could have been compiled better or that some things were wrong or in error, but all in all, a good contender for the “best Paleo book”.

Against All Grain: Delectable Paleo Recipes to Eat Well & Feel Great by Danielle Walker  is another good contender. This is a very popular book. Danielle Walker herself battled with autoimmune disease and she puts her own experience into this book. Many will appreciate her insight. The book is very attractive and well laid out. Some reviewers feel that many of the recipes include too many nuts which could be a problem for some. Others find some of the recipes too unusual, while others praise the book and recipes.

The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet by Robb Wolf and Loren Cordain  is a best seller by two of the most respected names in Paleo.  This will probably appeal more to the seasoned or scientific Paleo person more. This is a book that many have claimed “changed their lives”. Although it is more on the technical side of Paleo, Robb Wolf is a very good writer and tells the story in a familar easy to understand manner. It is not really a cookbook or guide to cooking Paleo meals. Image

Well Fed: Paleo Recipes for People Who Love to Eat by Melissa Joulwan  is a bestseller Paleo book and this one as you may have guessed, is primarily a recipe book or cookbook. The recipes are well recieved to say the least. Almost everyone agrees that the recipes in this book are top notch. Most reviewers say that the recipes are delicious.

And thats just the beginning. Since Paleo is so popular, there are hundreds of popular books available at this time. And this just makes choosing the best Paleo book more difficult.

The problem with the “best anything” is that it assumes there is one definitive choice, for thousands of different people, with totally different needs. The best Paleo book, is the one that helped you the most.

Knowing this, Id like to end this post with a different approach. Let us say for our purposes that the best Paleo book is one that both teaches and gives great recipes and that the content is still valuable to the seasoned Paleo dieter.

So far all the books Ive mentioned are best seller books that can be purchased in most book stores as well as online. There are however books that are not available at bookstores, nor would they be considered a best seller. Im referring to a couple of books in particular that are sold online in a different manner. These are The Paleo Recipe Book, and Paleohacks Cookbook. I will speak more of Paleohacks Cookbook as I am more familar with it.

Paleohacks Cookbook is a product by the folks that run Paleohacks.com. Paleohacks is a well known forum for discussion of the Paleo diet. It is the largest online community of Paleo diet enthusiasts. The members and staff include chefs, health professionals, and people from every walk of life.

    Although I have never tried a Paleo diet, I am curious. I am not looking to lose weight but I realize this diet is about all around health, not necessarily losing weight. I think I will try some recipes to see what I think.

      It is about both. By omitting carbs and sugars you will lose fat, and depending on your health, you should feel better.
